DoctorsProofNPPES directory · verify at state boards

Methodology

How we build this site, what we verify, and what we do not.

Summary

We aggregate the public NPPES (National Plan and Provider Enumeration System) registry published by CMS and organize it by city, state, and specialty. We do not verify licenses or complaints ourselves — for that, we link directly to each state medical board.

Data Pipeline

  1. Ingest. We download the NPPES bulk file from CMS (updated monthly) and filter to individual providers (Entity Type 1) whose primary taxonomy code corresponds to a physician specialty (allopathic and osteopathic 20*-family codes).
  2. Normalize. We standardize address fields, format phone numbers, and compute years since NPI enrollment.
  3. Attach specialty. Physician taxonomy codes carry real specialty information in NPPES (unlike some other health professions), so we label each record with its declared specialty.
  4. Enrich with CMS Open Payments. Where CMS Open Payments data exists for the physician's NPI, we display the payment total and top payers as reported by industry. This is real, public, per-physician data — not estimated.
  5. Group by city and state, link to state boards. Every profile links to the correct state medical board for authoritative license lookups.

What We Publish

Only fields that appear in NPPES or another cited public source:

  • Provider first and last name
  • Credential (MD or DO — from NPPES "Provider Credential Text")
  • NPI number and taxonomy code
  • NPPES-declared specialty
  • Practice-location address, ZIP code, and phone
  • NPI enumeration date and years since NPI enrollment
  • CMS Open Payments totals when available (real API data, not estimated)
  • Medicare participation flag from CMS Medicare Provider Data when available

What We Deliberately Do NOT Publish or Claim

License status.

NPPES does not publish license status. We do not claim it. Use the state medical board link on every profile to verify current status.

Disciplinary or complaint history.

NPPES does not publish complaints. State boards do. We link there rather than republish.

Clinical years of experience.

"Years on NPPES" is a specific NPPES-derived number, not a claim about clinical practice years.

Practice name for individual NPIs.

We only display a practice name when NPPES has a real "Provider Organization Name" field. We do not fabricate one.

Trust scores, rankings, endorsements.

We do not score, rank, or endorse individual physicians. No free public data supports doing so honestly.

Corrections and Removal

Providers may request correction or removal via our contact page. We honor takedown requests within 1 week.
